陈寔①在乡间，以平和的心对待事物。

百姓间出现争执官司时，陈寔判决公正，告诉百姓道理的曲直，百姓回去后没有埋怨的。

大家感叹说：“宁愿被刑罚处治，也不愿被陈寔批评。”

当时年成不好，民众没有收成，有小偷夜间进入陈寔家里，躲在房梁上。

陈寔暗中发现了，就起来整顿衣服，让子孙聚拢过来，正色训诫他们说：“人不可以不自我勉励。不善良的人不一定本性是坏的，坏习惯往往由不注重品性修养而形成，于是到了这样的地步。梁上君子就是这样的人！”
